We adore Ubud and have been there several times in the last few years. Every time we go, we look forward to slow living and the healthy vegetarian food at the many cafes and restaurants that have cropped up, thanks to the wellness and yoga scene here.
Here’s a list of suggested places to try. Most of these are places we’ve visited multiple times and recommend for vegetarian and vegan food.
- Clear Cafe Ubud – a spacious place spread on two levels. It’s eco-friendly and has a relaxed setting and offers a range of smoothies, juices and tonics while the food has adaptations from Mexican, Indian, Western and Indonesian. Do try their Vegan Chocolate Shake, Diamond Detox, Glittery Gold in the beverages. And in food, the Golden Temple Curry, Snow Tofu and Vegetarian Pad Thai are options we recommend.
- Earth Cafe & Market – the ground floor is a small store where you can pick up nutritious food ingredients. While the second floor is the cafe. We spent almost 2 hours in the relaxed chairs on the balcony here. We ordered slowly, ate, talked and ate some more. We recommend trying their Bali Boost, Lemon Rosemary Tofu Wrap and Spaghetti with Seitan balls.
- Soma Cafe – a cafe which looks like it’s someone’s courtyard. Again, eco-friendly with a very relaxed vibe. Gives you the option to sit on low tables and stretch your legs, choose the sofas near a small water fountain or plonk yourselves on comfortable chairs under an umbrella. Offers healthy drinks and several raw food options. Do try their Wana Wrap!
- KAFE – cozy space spread on two levels. Best way to enjoy the place is to relax on a low table and sit cross legged or score a spot on the balcony. We suggest their Belly Juice and their Samosas are pretty good as well.
With their smoothies, healthy fruit bowls, pancakes, wraps and sandwiches, we feel the above are excellent for breakfast, brunch or lunch. For dinner though, here are two options that we liked.
- La Pacha Mama – is a Mexican restaurant and have a decent vegetarian menu. The setting is in an old courtyard with vines and branches all over the walls, which made us feel like we were somewhere in Europe. The evening we visited, they had a live band playing Spanish music which lended a festive vibe to the place. Their vegetarian platter for two was a good start and we followed that with ordering a half-portion of spinach quesadillas with refried beans. The ambience is great and the food is good, but the vegetarian options are limited.
- Dumbo – is an Italian restaurant and is completely vegetarian. The ground floor has a bar and a sit down area while the second floor had a much larger sitting area with a huge wood fired oven where you can watch pizzas being baked right there. The Pumpkin Ravioli was excellent and so were the Polenta Chips. Of course a pizza was a must and we went for the Spicy Sambal.
And finally to get a cup of specialty coffee visit Seniman Coffee Studio. Here you can learn to make your own by signing up for one of their workshops. While we loved Balinese Coffee which is available everywhere, if you crave a cappuccino or a latte, stop by here.
