Hi Everyone, we hope you’re all safe and doing well. These are strange times, isn’t it? Life as we know it has changed and we’re all in some form of Lockdown, all over the world. What’s kept us going meanwhile is cooking at home and we’ve been posting a lot on DJ’s Instagram lately – @foodiejhakal.
We hope things will change for the better, sooner rather than later. And with that hope, we share some of our favourite Indian restaurants in Singapore (note that some of these serve both veg and non-veg food).
We believe in sharing what we’ve experienced first hand so this post is not a list of the best places we think you should try. This post is to share with you, some of our favourite places – ones we’ve been to numerous times and vouch for. We’re also discovering new restaurants all the time, so this list will surely grow and we’ll share more in subsequent posts 🙂
Do note that some of these places have multiple outlets so do your research before you visit, although we’ve included the links below, to help you get started.
South Indian
- MTR 1924 – as the named suggests, the original Mavalli Tiffin Room was founded in 1924 in Bengaluru, India. Since then, several branches have opened up in India and abroad. And the same taste and quality is maintained everywhere. Go here to enjoy Idlis, Medu Vadas, Dosas and so much more from their menu. Do get the filter coffee with or after your meal (100% Veg – $)
- Komala Vilas – this is one of oldest vegetarian restaurants in Singapore, established in 1947. Such is its legacy that when Prime Minister Modi visited Singapore, he went here with Prime Minister Lee to grab a bite. Go here for the Idli, Dosa or Uttapam (100% Veg – $)
- Podi & Poriyal – warm, inviting and tastefully decorated, Podi & Poriyal is a treat both for body and soul. The place serves homely and nutritious South Indian food. Their menu changes everyday so you won’t get tired of visiting anytime soon (100% Veg – $$)
North Indian
- Jaggi’s North Indian Cuisine – a delightful place offering the best dhaba style punjabi food in the city, in our opinion. Go here for the Aloo Gobhi, Chole, Dal fry and stuffed Kulchas. It’s very pocket friendly and you can easily enjoy a meal here in the S$ 10.00-15.00 range per head ($)
- Urban Roti – This is a relatively newer restaurant serving North Indian food in Singapore in a contemporary setting. It also has multiple branches which you can check out on their website. Their food is a burst of amazing flavours and this joint has become one of our favourites. We’ve often enjoyed their weekday set meals which are generous portions of mouth watering authentic Indian food and the Ala carte is even better ($$)
- Kinara: North Indian Cuisine – As the name suggests, it’s a restaurant serving North Indian food – think rotis, naan, tandoori, tikkas and so on. Kinara has been operating in Singapore for many years and has multiple branches that you can locate via their website. It’s our go to place when we crave dal, roti, baigan bharta and some mango lassi or jaljeera to accompany the food ($$)
Indian Street Food and Chaat
- Kailash Parbat – Is a vegetarian restaurant that had it’s humble beginnings way back in the 1950s in Mumbai, India. Now, it has branches not only in India and Singapore but in several cities around the world. Visit here for some lip-smacking Indian street food among other things (100% Veg – $$)
- Adda – This is a fusion Indian food restaurant where they’ve added their own interesting twist to several Indian chaat items, the mains and even the desserts, which sets it apart from any other Indian restaurant in town. e.g. their menu consists of desi tacos, corn-asparagus tikkis, bok-choy cottage cheese kofta, gulab jamun cheese cake etc. Besides, they offer a special weekend brunch menu and an extensive drinks menu which makes it a great weekend hangout ($$)
- Flying Monkey – is an Indian tapas bar that serves an eclectic mix of Indian food and craft cocktails with a desi twist. The place offers street food and chaat items such as Vada Pav, Papdi chaat, Samosa etc. And the mains consists of dishes like Gucchi Pulao, Paneer Kofta, Dal Makhni etc. Our go to items here are the Kulcha Channa and Daab Sabzi – the must-haves in our opinion ($$)
We hope this post was helpful and we leave you with our food vlogs from Singapore, where we share our experience dining at various vegetarian options in the city.
